Cashback platform, credit card points, loyalty scan - three independent earning streams that all pay on the same purchase, and almost nobody uses all three. Enter a purchase and see the full stack.

The platforms are free: ShopBack vs TopCashback vs Aura (and yes, ShopBack is legit - with caveats about tracking). The card layer: best rewards cards for everyday Australians.

Common questions

Can you really stack cashback, card points and loyalty on one purchase?

Often, yes. Buy through a cashback platform, pay with a rewards card, and scan a loyalty card at checkout, and a single purchase can return value three ways. The calculator adds up the triple-dip.

Does stacking always work?

No. Some retailers exclude cashback on gift cards or sale items, and a few block points on certain payment types. Always check the cashback platform’s terms first.

Three payments for one purchase

Most people use one earning method per purchase. There are usually three available, and they are independent of each other - none of them cancels out the others, because each is paid by a different party for a different reason.

  1. The cashback platform is paid affiliate commission by the retailer for sending the sale, and hands most of it back to you.
  2. The credit card earns points funded by the merchant fee the retailer pays its bank.
  3. The loyalty scheme - Everyday Rewards, Flybuys - is paid for by the retailer as a marketing cost.

Stack all three and a single purchase pays you three times. The calculator above shows the combined return on a purchase amount.

Chart: a $400 purchase earns $20 cashback platform, $6 card points and $2 loyalty scan, $28 total

A worked example

A $400 online purchase:

  • Cashback platform at 5%: $20
  • Card earning 1 point per dollar, points valued at 1.5c: 400 points, about $6
  • Loyalty scan at the usual supermarket-style rate: roughly $2

Total around $28 on a purchase you were making anyway - about 7%. Using only the card, you would have collected $6.

The cashback platform is doing most of the work here, which is the general pattern: platform rates of 3% to 10% dwarf a card earning roughly 1.5%. If you only adopt one habit, make it checking a cashback platform before you buy.

The order of operations matters

Stacking only works if you do it in the right sequence, because the cashback platform has to be the last thing that touched your browser before the retailer sees the sale:

  1. Open the cashback platform first and click through to the retailer from there.
  2. Complete the purchase in that same session, without opening a coupon site in between.
  3. Pay with the rewards card.
  4. Scan or link the loyalty account at checkout.

The most common reason cashback fails to track is step one being done out of order - going to the retailer first, then remembering the platform. An ad blocker or a competing affiliate cookie will also break it.

When the stack is smaller than it looks

  • Exclusions. Gift cards, sale items and some brands are routinely excluded from cashback. Read the retailer’s terms on the platform page, not the headline rate.
  • The card is not accepted. An Amex earning well is earning zero at ALDI or Costco.
  • Tracking failure. It happens to everyone eventually. Keep the order confirmation - claims usually need it.
  • Buying things you did not need. A 7% return on an unnecessary $400 purchase is a 93% loss. This is the one that actually costs people money.

Common questions

Can I use two cashback platforms on one purchase?

No. Only the last affiliate link counts, so the second one simply overwrites the first. Pick whichever quotes the higher rate - compare TopCashback against ShopBack before you click.

Does using a coupon code kill the cashback?

Often, yes - if the code came from another affiliate site, that site’s cookie replaces the platform’s. Use codes listed on the cashback platform itself.

How long until the cashback arrives?

Typically 60 to 90 days, after the retailer’s returns window closes. Treat it as a delayed discount, not income.

Which platform should I start with?
